Insurance companies are not only analyzing property addresses and mapping them to fuel loads, but they're also mapping topography and wind directions into their risk models. Many insurance companies have simply chosen not to issue new policies in Mammoth Lakes.
Hopefully projects like this will help change the risk models of some of these companies. Beyond insurance, wildfire is a huge threat to Mammoth Lakes in general, and the possibility of losing any percentage of homes, business or infrastructure would be devastating.
