Avoiding Insurance? Think About Safety

Have you ever heard statistics about accidents around the home? A Secure Life lists falls as number one.

My house is located in Crowley Lake, CA. Every year we have friends and family over to celebrate Independence Day. In 2018 one of my uncles tripped on a lower step, but luckily he wasn't hurt badly. What makes the story worse? He is the second person to stumble on this stupid step.

It may have taken me 355 days, but I finally addressed the problem. I added screws and strengthened the end step by adding to the toe kick to make the step more solid. I also added the red tape and mat. I think part of the problem is the grey trex just blends and people didn't realize there was a step there. Even while writing this, I came up with another way to increase the safety of this step: adding a strip of LED lights. Thankfully Independence Day this year was wonderful, and my deck was tumble-free.

But what if my uncle or another guest did get hurt? My homeowners insurance can help in this sort of situation. For minor incidents, guest medical payments are available for no fault liability for $1,000 to $5,000 limit. This is usually enough for an initial ER visitor or to pay your guest's medical deductible.

Beyond this, for more serious bodily injury incidents, liability insurance with a typical minimum amount of $100,000 is included in most Homeowners HO3 or HO5, Condo Unit Owners HO6 and Renters Insurance HO4 policies. We always suggest higher limits than this, and beyond a $500,000 limit, personal umbrella policies are available in $1,000,000 increments.
